A few underwater pictures from the Lion City
Most readers will now know that Imagethief spent the weekend diving on an archaelogical site at Qiandaohu, a 35km long reservoir near Hangzhou. The site is Lion City (狮城), a village several hundred years old that was flooded when the Xin'an River was dammed in 1959. My friend Steven Schwankert of
Sinoscuba organized the trip. There were only four of us, including Steve and the man who operates the site, so it was nice and intimate.
Since the actual video will be a while in coming, I've grabbed
a few interesting frames and posted them as stills along with a picture of Imagethief in full cold water kit. These carvings were all at a site called the imperial tablet, which was an eight meter high archway covered almost entirely with fabulously ornate and detailed carvings. The bottom was at about 28 meters depth and the top of the tablet at about 20 meters. Bottom temperature was a frosty 12C and ambient light, as you will see, about zip. It was fascinating and good fun.
More to come.
