Same with their cell phone pictures.   I've never understood this.  

Amen brother. I actually had one girl tell me she was a photographer. When I expressed interest in seeing "her work" she quickly whipped out her mobile phone to share. After 7-8 self-portraits, I had to say, "I don't think you classify as a photographer if you only take pictures of yourself!"

She looked at me as if I was the crazy one.

Does this apply to the fugly ones too?

I predict that MySpace knockoffs like Qzone will be the next big thing on the web in China because of this phenomena.

What if the young Chinese woman has a Westerner on her desk or vice versa?

Ok, I've been dying to ask this question: What if she has  Skinhua-style pictures of scantily clad women in come-hither poses? A former boss's secretary had such a picture as the wallpaper of her computer.

Probably number 1. She was always a bit on the distant side. Still, visiting her cubicle was always interesting.
