Tell Imagethief what Beijing's ugliest new buildings are
Strolling down Chang'an Avenue recently I was struck by how much of central Beijing's recent construction is, well, nasty. Seriously: Jianwai Soho, Twins Mall, Wanda, it's all transforming the Boulevard into one long strip of gleaming, mixed-use wreckage pockmarked with Starbucks outlets.
I'd like to feature a selection of the most horrifying recent architecture to grace the city, Imagethief style, but I need help from readers. Imagethief is asking readers who live in or who have visited Beijing to nominate whatever they feel are Beijing's most ghastly, tasteless, ludicrous or otherwise offensive new buildings.
Some ground rules. Nominate as many as you like, but I am looking for buildings erected after 2000. No Great Hall of the People or such. Buildings can be anywhere in the city, but Beijing only, please. Someone else can take care of Shanghai, Guangzhou, Qiqiha'er, etc. Photos or Internet links to online photos are helpful if you want to nominate an obscure building, but no need if it's something we all know. You can use the comments below, or e-mail me at will -at- imagethief -dot- com. I will publicly roast up to ten finalists, including photographing them if necessary.
I know that this has been done before. But none of the previous treatments seem to be online any more, and none featured Imagethief-style savaging. So let's do it again.
By the way, I'm doing this not because I think Beijing is an ugly city, but because I think, optimistically perhaps, that it's capable of being pretty (especially on clear days). It's just not necessarily headed that direction.
The shape of things to come?
