This rhetorical device is not repugnant. Of all the sausage machine propaganda sound bites that the Chinese use this one talks about feelings and that's a good thing.

It's only natural when talking about feelings to develop a more mature view of empathy.

Whatever the reason. If the Chinese people feel that a country has hurt their feelings. Who are we to say that is wrong. It's a good thing they talk about their feelings because the next step is to explain why.

As China's economic might grows, it's presence is felt more and more internationally. China is increasingly hurting the feelings of many countries if not the most of the planet when it bullies Taiwan or Tibet or even it's own people when supressing Chinese injustice.

The only reservation I have about China's use of this term is that it never asks it's people's if their feelings have been hurt. It often tells them when and where to hurt. But then propaganda works just like this in the West when stirring up outrage.

No. Let's have more talk of feelings and less talk of might is right.

I say that is wrong. I checked with my chinese friend today and she said her feelings were fine. Then we went and ate a sandwitch at Paul's.

Who is CCP to speak about the peoples feelings anyway? It might not be the most repugnant of their rhetorical devices, but it is for sure one of the dumbest.

Does anyone know if there are any statistics for how many times the Chinese government has hurt the feelings of the Chinese people?

Or has it always steadfastly and unswervingly stuck to their side with a scientific outlook principle in the spirit of win-win cooperation?

Notice that pesky free nation Taiwan is not blacked in...

I'd bet I'm safe to say that during the DPP reign, the feelings of the thugs in Zhongnanhai have been hurt a couple times.

The original listing of quotes from the People's Daily was both informative and funny. This map here, however, is rather useless and misleading. The Chinese propaganda machine has never blamed entire countries for "hurting the feelings of the Chinese people", it only attacks foreign politicians and political organizations, while going out on its way each time to emphasize that the actions of the said individuals or groups were "rouge" and not representative of the attitude of the country or the people.

For example, Chinese officials has never accused the entire country of Japan of hurting the feeling, only specific Japanese politicians, who -- at least according to the Chinese officials -- have been acting in contrast of the good intentions of the friendly Japanese people.

The "hurting the feeling" phrase is ridiculous enough by itself, there is no need to distort it further more for the purpose of critical commentary.

But no-one is doing that. What's going on here is distorting it further for the purpose of _comedy_.

I don't think your sample of one would constitute a trend, statistically speaking.

Love the chart!  But I absolutely refuse to believe the Canada has ever hurt China's or any other nations feelings (unless perhaps they are talking about Celine Dion, in which case I demand an apology as well!)

I touched upon this is a post a few months ago, but I think we (that being, the various nations that have somehow offended China) should come up with a catchy diplomatic response to these claims of hurt feelings.  Something along the lines of this...

"We are sorry that we inadvertently hurt the feelings of the Chinese people.  Had we known the Chinese people were so emotionally sensitive, we would have phased our statement in a more delicate manner."

I feel really sad that Australia isn't up there. As a nation we must do more to hurt the feelings of the Chinese people. After all, we are loud, rude, insensitive and generally get on everyone else's nerves.

Perhaps the Chinese can't understand Aussie accents?
